Is there any way to make the paddle shift transmission more precise and faster shifting? Would a shift kit help in any way?

Given you have a 5L40-E transmission, which is the automatic that is used behind all 190/195 Alloytec engines, modifications are limited. The main reason for this is the fact that the transmission control module (TCM), cannot be custom tuned at this point in time. Fortunately though these GM transmission were also available in some BMW vehicles, resulting in some internal performance parts available for them such as the shift kit shown below which may help with what you're after.

While in theory the shift kit above should work well in a Commodore, we can't guarantee it would work as we don't know of anyone who has tried one yet. Mechanical transmission upgrades aside, another option would be to run an aftermarket transmission controller as shown in the link below. This would allow for full transmission control. http://www.powertraincontrolsolutions.com/product/TCM2000/
